Moon Portable Restrooms offers quality portapotties in Louisville, KY and the surrounding areas.

A History of the Porta-Potty

The porta-potty. Today, there are a wide range of available porta-potties on the market, from the simplest single units to large restroom trailers. How did we get here? We’re taking a look back at the history of the porta-potty in today’s blog.

The Beginning

Did you know that modern porta-potties only have roots starting in the middle of the 20th century? World War II is thought to be the time around which the modern porta-potty really started. Some bomber aircraft in the war utilized early units called Elsan chemical closets. Around the same time, the dock loading industry was using an early version of the portable restroom. Loading and unloading was made more efficient with the use of basic portable restrooms on ships for dock workers. These early designs were built with wood and metal. They lacked the sanitizing elements we know today like deodorizer and handwash.

The 1970’s

One major innovation for the modern porta-potty occurred in the 70’s- using fiberglass. Unlike wood and metal, fiberglass is light, easy to clean, and very simple to transport. It does have a few downsides though- it’s relatively fragile and holds odors.

Another innovation solved this issue- using polyethylene. This is a type of plastic that remains in common use today, and is likely what the porta-potties you have seen are constructed with. Polyethylene is even lighter and more durable than fiberglass. It wasn’t just the material that was an innovation. These units are in pieces as well, making it easy to transport the restrooms and switch out broken parts. All of these innovations meant longer-lasting, more transportable porta-potties.

The Porta-Potty Today

Today, porta-potty design has continued to evolve to meet various consumer needs. There are quality standard units that people often use on construction sites and at large events. There are also luxury versions of these single units, with amenities like flushing toilets, sinks, interior lighting, and more. Take a look at what Moon has in our line of units here!

Another major thread of innovation is the restroom trailer. You can attach these units to trailer hitches and haul them easily. They often contain at least two restrooms, but can have up to three or more individual restrooms. Some larger trailers even have a traditional public restroom setup with multiple stalls. Trailers often have features like interior lighting, air conditioning, heating, mirrors, sinks, and finished floors and walls. Some trailers even have shower stalls and changing areas. The sky is the limit with these modern trailer units. Check out some of Moon’s offerings to see for yourself!

There are also a variety of accessories for porta-potties today. Handwashing stations, large holding tanks, and specialized slings are just a few of the add-ons you can use to augment a unit. Check out Moon’s array of accessories here!

How Porta-Potties are Designed and Maintained

Porta-potties are such a ubiquitous aspect of construction sites, large events, and other settings that you may have never given them a second thought. But have you ever wondered how they work? There are actually several interesting design features in porta-potties that make them effective and easy to use and maintain. Let’s take a closer look at how portable restrooms are designed and maintained.

Standard Features in Porta-Potties

The average porta-potty has a few distinct features. They have plastic components and support rails underneath for stabilization. Most have translucent roofs (often white) that let in some light. They also have non-slip floors to prevent falls and ventilation systems to vent odors from the holding tank. The holding tank itself can vary in size, with 60 gallons being one standard size. There is often a non-splash urinal, toilet paper holder, and a hand sanitizer dispenser as well.

There are a few other kinds of portable restroom setups that you may see around. Restroom trailers often have additional features like stairs, flushing toilets, finished floors, fully-functional sinks, counters, mirrors, and lighting. They often have an option for heating or air conditioning as well. They can even have shower facilities in some cases. See Moon’s lineup of restroom trailers here for more some examples.

Some portable restrooms are designed specifically for high-rise construction sites. Cranes can lift these units up to any level of a high-rise and placed for use. See Moon’s PolyLift line here for an example.

The Holding Tank

The holding tank is probably the most fascinating part of the porta-potty. There are several design features that make it a modern marvel. You may be familiar with the blue liquid you see in the tank. This liquid contains a few important things: biocides to kill microbes and bacteria, blue dye to hide waste, and fragrance to cover odors.

Experts clean out porta-potties with vacuum technology. To clean them, experts use large trucks with holding tanks and a vacuum attachment. They attach the vacuum hose to an output in the porta-potty and suck out the contents into a holding tank on the truck. They then fill the porta-potty holding tank with fresh water from another tank on the truck, and add the blue liquid.

However, there are a few things that can complicate the cleaning process. In some unfortunate cases, porta-potties can get knocked over, whether by accident or on purpose. This makes cleaning them much more difficult. Workers often have to flip them and manually clean the insides of units in these cases. Additionally, waste can spew out if a porta-potty is lying on its door side. Some items can also clog the vacuum hose if dropped into the holding tank too. Fortunately, experienced technicians like the team at Moon can handle these situations.

What are OSHA regulations on construction sites?

Construction Sites and Portable Restrooms: OSHA Regulations

Having a portable restroom at a construction site is a must for many reasons. It increases productivity and keeps employees healthy. It is also a legal requirement. OSHA requires a certain number of restrooms near job sites, depending on the size of a crew. So when you’re ready to rent restrooms for your next job site, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Let’s take a look at some of the nuances of the rules.

Following OSHA regulations at construction sites

First and foremost, OSHA regulations dictate that you must have a certain number of restrooms available on site. In regards to portable restrooms, the amount and location is important. Sites with 20 or fewer employees are required to have at least 1 toilet. For sites with 21-199 employees, 1 toilet and 1 urinal per 40 workers is required. For large sites with 200 or more workers, 1 toilet and 1 urinal per 50 workers is necessary.

Requirements don’t just apply to the number of restrooms, though. The location of those restrooms is regulated too. They need to be reasonably close by so that it’s not inconvenient to get to them. OSHA specifically says that restrooms must be ‘provided’ and therefore ‘available’, arguing that restrooms that are not close by are not available. OSHA goes on to state that ‘[I]n general, toilets would be considered ‘nearby’ if it would take less than 10 minutes to get to them.’ So, 10 minutes or less of travel time should be your rule of thumb when you think about placing restrooms at a site.

If you have mobile crews, the same principle applies. OSHA states that ‘Workers who continually or frequently move from jobsite to jobsite on a daily or hourly basis would be considered a “mobile crew.”’ In these cases, ‘nearby’ still requires prompt access within 10 minutes. There is flexibility, as long as restrooms are provided for (with the proper amount per number of employees) within the proximity to meet the definition of ‘nearby.’

Beyond compliance

OSHA regulations are just the bare minimum, though. You may want to exceed them to provide a better experience for your workers. Fortunately, it’s easy to find great options on portable restrooms and handwashing stations. Moon Portable Restrooms has a wide selection of portable restrooms and accessories specific to construction sites. For example, check out the PolyLift, a restroom solution designed for high-rise construction sites. Or, take a look at the Lift Sling, a sling accessory engineered for cranes to move restrooms between locations on site. Handwashing stations streamline everything, creating a centralized location by portable restrooms. Plus, for larger or longer jobs, don’t overlook the option to rent a holding tank. Moon’s 300 gallon holding tank is an effective waste receptacle that’s discrete, durable, and dead useful when indoor plumbing isn’t an option.

How did Coronavirus have a role in outdoor events

Coronavirus and Outdoor Events

As we enter a Summer unlike any other during the pandemic, many of us are figuring out how to safely be around others. Outdoor gatherings or events, when approached carefully, may be a viable option to get together while still staying safe. Let’s take a look at some of the things to keep in mind for outdoor gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic.

Healthy behaviors to prevent coronavirus spread

There are several behaviors that are important to encourage for any people attending a gathering. First, people should stay home from events when necessary. For example, if someone has recently tested positive for the coronavirus, or if they are showing symptoms of the coronavirus, they should not attend any events. If you are planning an event, consider creating policies that encourage this for employees, volunteers, and attendees. Flexible refund and worker policies can help promote safer behaviors.

For people who will be attending an outdoor event or gathering, good hygiene is incredibly important. Regular hand-washing is a key component of preventing disease spread, so easy access to hand-washing and sanitizing stations and areas is crucial. People should also cover coughs and sneezes and wash their hands immediately after.

Cloth face coverings are another key aspect of preventing disease spread. By wearing masks at gatherings, people who may be unknowingly infected keep others safe. Masks are especially important when social distancing is not possible. This distancing is another key component of safe gatherings. People should maintain a distance of at least six feet from people not in their households when possible.

To ensure all of these behaviors are encouraged and followed, make sure you provide necessary supplies and reminders. Post signs that remind people of healthy behaviors in visible locations, and make sure there are enough hand-washing and sanitizing stations. You may want to announce regular reminders to hand-wash, distance, and sanitize. Additionally, you may need to provide cloth masks for people without them.

Healthy environments

There are several key parts of making a safe and healthy environment for outdoor gatherings during the pandemic. Clean and disinfect high-use and shared surfaces on a regular schedule (between use as much as possible). This can include tables, handles, and railings.

Restrooms can be a tricky area to manage too. You can limit the number of people who can use a restroom at the same time. Additionally, you can implement a six foot distance policy for any restroom lines. Make sure to regularly clean restrooms, and stock them with hand-washing supplies. Fortunately, companies like Moon Portable Restrooms can help you get the restrooms and sanitizing stations you need for a safer gathering.

Gathering layouts are important to consider as well. You can consider limiting gathering capacity or seating to enable more social distancing. You can also enforce distancing by creating distance between seats and putting distanced lines or other markers on the ground where lines may form.

If food is a part of your gathering, there are a few other important considerations. There is no evidence that the coronavirus can spread through food directly. However, sharing utensils and congregating in shared spaces to get or consume food can spread the disease. Disposable food service items like silverware and plates can be a safe option. Additionally, you should distance seating areas and clean them as much as possible. You should also avoid self-service dining.

Local context

The most important consideration for any outdoor gathering is the specific local context. At a basic level, the higher the level of community transmission in the place a gathering is held, the higher the risk of disease spread is at the gathering. Every location is experiencing disease spread and impact in different ways, and different cities, counties, states, and countries have their own rules in response. You should always check specific guidance for where your gathering or event may be. That guidance will give you the best idea of specific do’s and don’ts, and whether having your event is allowable or responsible.

Planning An Outdoor Wedding? Here’s What You Need To Consider

An outdoor wedding can be incredibly charming when you choose the right venue. If you are planning one, there is a lot more you’d need to consider than the cake and the music. There are specific challenges to organizing a wedding in an outdoor setting, and if you want your big day to run seamlessly, there are many other things that would need to be considered. Here we take a look at some of the most important ones:

  1. Attire/Footwear

For an outdoor setting, you would need to make sure that your guests are dressed as per the season; that’s something you’d have to specify in your wedding invitation. For example, a summer wedding outdoors would call for flowing, light, and breathable fabrics. If the wedding is to be held in colder months, cardigans, woolens, and pashminas would be needed.

The wedding party attire would need special attention. If the outdoor location is a sandy beach or landscape, it will lead to grass stains and dirt. It is something you should be prepared and plan for. If there are stone pathways or lush grassy areas at the outdoor wedding venue, you need to ensure that you and all the wedding guests are wearing suitable shoes as well.

  1. Transportation for Guests

If you have chosen a wedding venue in a remote location, make sure that all your guests can access it easily. Check with the venue whether they have any transportation facilities, to and from the site. Depending on how easy it is to access the place, you might have to plan transportation from the reception area to restrooms.

  1. Quick Access to Bathrooms

The bathrooms need to be at a convenient location so that your guests don’t have to be concerned about missing any important moments. Consider things like the distance of the restrooms from the reception and how the walk is. Is there the right ratio of restrooms to wedding guests? The other option is to rent luxury portable restrooms and make sure that there is a responsible person to stock them with all the necessary amenities such as toilet paper etc.

  1. Other Costs

If there are any specific features you want, such as ambient lights and more, check whether the venue provides them and at what cost. Depending on the season, if you need to get tent rentals at the last minute, find out what those costs will be. It’s crucial to choose a venue equipped to handle this set-up at short notice either on their own or a professional third-party vendor, at a cost-effective price.

  1. Sound Systems

This is another aspect you would have to keep in view and plan for. Check whether the venue provides the necessary equipment and has a sound team. After all, you would need a good system in place so your guests can hear your vows and that there is music they can dance to. Check on local noise curfews and restrictions that can change depending on how close the venue is to guest accommodations.

Some other things to consider are photo lighting arrangements and weather conditions. This thorough planning will help to ensure that when your big day finally arrives, you and your guests aren’t inconvenienced and that the ceremony and reception move forth without a glitch.

If you feel that it’s too challenging for you to plan all these things down to the last detail, you may want to consider hiring a wedding planner. These professionals can help with every aspect of planning your big day.

Planning an Outdoor Wedding? Here Are 5 Reasons Why You Should Rent A Bathroom Trailer

Whether you’re planning on getting hitched in your parent’s backyard, on a sprawling farm, park or vineyard, there’s no denying the charm of a picturesque outdoor wedding. In fact, outside wedding ceremonies and receptions are quickly becoming one of this year’s biggest wedding trends. And yet, after couples book their caterer, DJ, photographer, tent, tables and decor, bathrooms seem to be the last thing anybody thinks about.

However, if you’re planning on having your wedding a little off the beaten path, here’s why you’ll want to prioritize renting a top of the line portable restroom:

  1. They’re nicer than you think.

While the idea of renting a portable restroom for a formal outdoor wedding may not seem in keeping with the theme of the event, our luxury bathroom trailers are so clean and discreet that they resemble a brick and mortar restroom. Every trailer comes complete with flushing toilets, hot and cold water, as well as separate cabins for men and women. Additionally, many models feature wood grain flooring, Corian countertops, vessel sinks, subway tile, mirrors, cabinetry, a flat-screen TV and built-in stereo to match the sophistication of the day.

  1. You can celebrate anywhere and everywhere.

Don’t be limited by your venue. At Moon, we can accommodate your guests even if there’s no power or water close by. So if a remote and breathtaking view is what you’re after, give us a call. We’ve even set up beach side before!

  1. You can properly accommodate everyone.

Even if you’re outdoor venue already has bathrooms, chances are they won’t be up to par in terms of quality or quantity. Most parks for example have plenty of bathrooms open to the public. However, these tend to be dirty and irregularly maintained. On the other hand, if you’re celebrating at a personal residence there will likely be nice bathrooms, just not enough of them. Besides, the last thing your host will want is for your guests to have track through their house in search of one.

It’s best if your guests have a place worthy of freshening up in. It’s also important that everyone at your wedding can comfortably use the loo should they need to. At Moon Portable Restrooms, we offer an ADA compliant bathroom trailer. This option is extra spacious and fully accessible to everyone so your big day can go off without a hitch.

  1. You can get married in all types of weather.

Weather seems to always be the number one concern when it comes to planning an outdoor wedding. However, our portable restroom trailers are heated and air conditioned so you’re guests can be comfortable no matter the season.

  1. No maintenance required.

Not only do we deliver days before the event so you can rest assured everything will be in working order and in its proper place, our bathroom trailers come fully stocked and ready to go. Our personal attendant will even make sure it stays clean and functional for the duration of your reception so you have one less thing to worry about.
