Affordable Outdoor wedding venues in Southern Indiana

5 Outdoor Wedding Venues in Southern Indiana

In the search for the perfect wedding venue for your big day, there is no shortage of choices, but there is always a shortage of time, it seems. And while traditional wedding venues tend to be reliable and take less weight out of your wallet, the prime wedding months from April-October remain the most popular because of one incredibly important detail: weather. Nice weather, to be exact, especially if you’re looking at outdoor wedding venues.

Outdoor weddings take every advantage of that ‘nice weather’ factor, and have grown in popularity for a whole range of reasons – the beauty and ambience of a natural backdrop for your “I do’s” and wedding photos is unparalleled, the experience feels more personal to the couple, and the space that outdoor venues provide lends itself to each individual wedding plan, from large and lavish to small and intimate.

But not all outdoor wedding venues are created equal.

Luckily, we’ve dug into the venue search and come up with a list of some of the most beautiful outdoor wedding venues in Southern Indiana, each chosen to represent one category that you might be looking for regarding:

  • Affordability

Kentucky Music Festivals

Summer Music Festivals to Check Out in Kentucky

Everyone can enjoy live music. Whether you are an avid music fan or a casual listener, there is a show/festival for you this summer. Enjoying the weather and tunes with friends, family, or just by yourself is a great way to get out the door and have some fun. That’s why we’ve put together this list of amazing music festivals in Kentucky to check out this summer!

Waterfront Wednesdays

Louisville’s WFPK Waterfront Wednesdays are a wonderful option for families and music lovers alike this summer. The short, free, and family friendly shows usually contain three acts and are perfect for an affordable music experience. Plus, the shows take place on the scenic Louisville waterfront, providing a great view of the river. If you decide to check it out, keep an eye out for Moon portable restrooms! Portable restrooms are a key part of any large outdoor gathering, and at Moon we are happy to play the role we do in maintaining a clean and healthy environment at these outdoor festivals. The dates and lineups are listed here!

ROMP

ROMP: Bluegrass Roots and Branches Festival is put on by the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This festival is great for fans of bluegrass and folk music both young and old. ROMP, originally standing for “River of Music Party”, takes place every year in Owensboro’s Yellow Creek park. Because of the festival’s mission to acknowledge both the “roots” and “branches” of bluegrass, the lineup is a blend of classic bluegrass performers and refreshing, contemporary acts. For more details on the history and impact of ROMP, check out this awesome article from Owensboro Living, or check out the lineup and get tickets here.

Forecastle

Forecastle is arguably Kentucky’s premiere music festival. By creating a fun and unique atmosphere year after year, the festival has built a young and dedicated following. This summer’s lineup, equal parts eclectic and explosive, is not to be missed. With larger than life headliners such as Louisville native Jack Harlow, psychedelic powerhouse Tame Impala, and two-time Grammy winner Tyler the Creator, Forecastle truly has something for everyone. Even the most niche of music lovers will be excited by the inclusion of cutting edge acts like Still Woozy, Earl Sweatshirt, 100 Gecs, and Jpegmafia. Like WFPK’s Waterfront Wednesdays, Forecastle takes place in Louisville’s Waterfront Park, which means great views and plenty of access to the delicious restaurants found downtown. The full lineup and other details can be found here.

Louder Than Life

If you are looking for exciting, high-volume rock music, then Louder Than Life is the festival for you. Louder Than Life strives to live up to its name by providing festival goers with the ultimate rock, metal, and punk experience. In 2020 the festival, like so many others, was sadly canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Luckily, Louder Than Life was able to rally with around 160,000 attendees last year. If Louder Than Life sounds like your kind of festival, you can find tickets and details here.

Portable restrooms are a necessity for large outdoor gatherings like music festivals. At Moon, we help promote a fun, healthy, and clean environment by providing quality portable restroom solutions. Top Tips for Outdoor Event Planning

10 Tips for Hosting an Outdoor Event During the Pandemic

Thinking about surprising a loved one with an outdoor birthday party? Getting married? Looking to host a concert or movie night for your business or organization? Planning a race? Working on finally having that family reunion?

If you have an event in the works or have planned an event before, you probably know how difficult it is to coordinate every little thing. There are so many moving parts–food, venue, entertainment, music, guest’s needs–and there’s almost always some sort of unplanned hurdle, like bad weather, a picky eater, or technical difficulties.

What’s more, hosting a safe, fun event during the pandemic is tricky. You want to be able to connect and celebrate, but you don’t want to compromise the health of your guests, friends, or loved ones. That’s why many people have turned to outdoor gatherings as the ideal way to stay socially-distanced while still being able to meet in-person.

With spring just around the corner, there’s no better time to make sure you’re up-to-speed with the logistics and possible hang-ups you could face as an outdoor event planner. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or this is your first time planning an event, follow along!

1. Visit the Venue in Advance

This may seem obvious, but many people try to “just wing it” based on positive Yelp reviews or Instagram photos. Don’t be that person. Scope out your chosen venue in advance. Examine the geography of the space–Is it hilly? Windy? Muddy? Exceptionally dark? Nobody wants to get married in the shadow of a building! Feel free to measure or draw on paper where you will place things. Making sure you have the perfect spacing of tables, buffets, chairs, bathrooms, bars, parking spots, etc. is especially important during Covid.

2. Check Permits and Ordinances

Certain outdoor spaces, even in public parks, require paid permits or preliminary reservations. Do your research before showing up. Make sure there are no restrictive curfews, seasonal regulations, party size limitations, or conflicting events happening in the same space.

3. Plan For Accessibility

Making sure your event is inclusive and accommodating for those with disabilities, dietary concerns, or certain physical needs is very important to consider. Do you have wheelchair access? Have you met everyone’s dietary concerns or removed certain allergens from the menu? If you’re showing a movie, video, or on-screen presentation, do you have captions, large print, or an assistive listening device? If you need more information, check out this Accessibility Checklist by Cornell University.

4. Get Electrical

If you’re hosting an event with music or entertainment of any sort, chances are you’ll need plenty of electrical outlets. Many outdoor venues don’t have electricity, so bringing extension cords or a mobile power inverter may be necessary.

5. Who’s Going to Make It Happen?

What kind of staff will you need to make your event happen? If you’re hosting a tiny family gathering, you can probably manage as a party of one, but in most circumstances, you’ll need help! Will you have an entertainer, like a DJ, musician, or band? Do you need a catering staff to serve food or beverages? Need maintenance assistance to set up the space and keep the venue clean and orderly? Want vendors to sell wares? Considering a collaboration with a professional decorator or florist? Did you think about hiring a photographer to capture your precious memories? Do you need security if you have VIP personnel? … Maybe you just want a private event manager to handle it all for you! We’d understand.

6. Rain Check!

A rainy forecast doesn’t have to ruin your outdoor event. Many outdoor spaces can easily accommodate covered areas like marquees, patios, and tents, but should be coordinated and confirmed in advance. Otherwise, consider choosing a backup space to move to in the chance of inclement weather.

7. Where Do I Sit?

People care about their comfort, and you should too. Make sure to have plenty of adequate seating, especially if you’re serving a meal. Assigned seating can be a great idea to keep large parties settled. Elderly people in particular will need a space to rest. If the weather is especially hot, people will want somewhere to cool down.

8. Food!

Food builds connection between friends and family, establishing a shared experience. Making sure you have a great selection of food is vital. Have you met the needs of gluten-free guests, sugar-free guests, vegans, vegetarians, or those with an allergy? Consider the age range and demographics of your party–a child’s birthday party will have a very different menu than a lavish soiree. Coordinating the meal is also important–will it come out in courses? Is it a buffet? When will it happen, before or after the presentation? The planning, preparation, serving, and cleanup of food is far more complex than you’d think!

9. Figure Out Your Covid Plan

Adhering to social-distancing and Covid safety guidelines is a crucial concern. Seating guests in reasonably-separated spaces, providing plenty of room for walk-ways and lines to gather, limiting party size, and making sure you’re on the same page as your event staff is important to consider. If you’re going to require masks or proof of vaccination, be sure to let your guests know far in advance. Also, have a way of properly and discretely enforcing these policies–nobody wants to attend a superspreader event!

10. Secure The Sanitation!

If you haven’t thought about your bathroom situation, now’s the time. Making sure your guests have access to pleasant, comfortable restrooms is vital. Nobody wants to wait in line–make sure you have enough units to accommodate your party size. Having hand washing or sanitization stations may be advisable as well.

Portable Restroom Rentals at Moon Portables

Most of us are at least a little familiar with the options when it comes to portable restrooms. Standard porta-potties are common at events, public spaces, and construction sites. However, there are some options you may not be aware of. Today on the blog, we’ll be taking a look at Moon’s full array of portable restroom rentals

Overview of Moon’s Portable Restroom Rentals

As mentioned before, portable restrooms are flexible for your needs. Whether you need a solution for construction sites, special events, weddings or a backyard party, Moon Portable Restrooms offers a complete line of specialized restroom equipment. Our units are clean, well maintained restrooms with large interior spaces that come fully equipped. Here’s a look at the specific restrooms we have available for rent.

Standard Portable Unit

Our standard restroom has everything you expect and need from a portable restroom. It has maximum ventilation and an anti-slip floor to create a safe and comfortable environment. It also has a translucent top to let sunlight in, and comes with two toilet paper rolls. Another great feature is its size: though it’s streamlined, it actually has 17% more interior space than the average portable restroom.

This is a lightweight, sturdy, and user-friendly restroom that is very popular with our customers. It’s often the unit they select for everything from graduations to backyard cookouts. With a 60 gallon waste tank, it is also the appropriate size for many events.

Flushable Portable Restroom

This flushable restroom is a premium unit with an array of great features. First and foremost, it has a flushing toilet. This separates it from our standard unit. It also has a larger floor space (24% more than standard) and a hand sink, a soap dispenser, and a paper towel dispenser. Like our standard unit, it also has a translucent roof and anti-slip flooring.

The flushable restroom unit offers just a bit more than a standard portable restroom. It’s a great option for events where children may need help from their parents in the restroom.

ADA Compliant Restroom Trailers

Moon Portable Restrooms proudly offers a variety of ADA compliant portable restrooms for rent. The Comfort Elite ADA restroom trailer is specifically designed to meet and exceed the permanent structure criteria specified by the American Disabilities Act (ADA). The Comfort Elite ADA features three cabins with 100% privacy including: a women’s cabin, a men’s cabin, and an ADA compliant cabin.

The Comfort Elite ADA restroom trailer’s exclusive “one-touch” hydraulic lowering system enables the entire trailer to smoothly and quietly lower to the ground for accessibility, making ramps obsolete. Additional luxury features in this restroom include a flushing porcelain toilet, a sink, LED lighting, touch-free faucets, and a full-length mirror.

Restroom Trailers: A Versatile Option for Events

Restroom trailers are an excellent option for many types of events. Just like porta-potties, they offer convenient on-site restroom facilities. They also boast several other features that we think are worth highlighting. Today on the blog it’s all about restroom trailers!

Restroom Trailers Offer Capacity Versatility

One of the key features a restroom trailer offers is higher capacity. From the smallest two-stall trailers to the largest multi-stall trailers, these units are perfect for events of any size. With a single unit, you can easily have several restrooms available at once, meeting the needs of your particular event easily. The best part is its scalable- if you only need two restrooms, you can select a unit like the Porta Lisa. If your event requires multiple stalls, you can book something like the 28’ Flex Large Restroom Trailer. This trailer boasts 7 stalls, with 2 flex stalls that you can add to either the men’s or women’s side of the trailer to meet your needs (with a dividing partition).

AC, Showers, and More Amenities

Another great thing about restroom trailers is that you can have as many or as few amenities as you’d like. All of Moon’s trailers come with custom features like full sinks, mirrors, and flushing toilets. However, if you want to spruce things up a bit, you can go for a unit like the Comfort Elite Platinum Plus. This luxury trailer has sophisticated design elements and accents and is equipped with both air conditioning and heat. It also offers 2 women’s stalls and a full size vanity, plus three urinals and 1 stall with a full size vanity on the men’s side. Its wood grain floor, mirrors, cabinetry, subway tile, and built-in stereo add a dash of sophistication to the experience too.

You can also select a unit that provides showering facilities if that suits your needs. For instance, our 8-Stall Shower Trailer can be used as a decontamination facility, a disaster relief unit, or an emergency shower. It comes with 8 shower stalls, 2 vanity countertops with 2 sinks each, custom mirrors, and a 300 gallon fresh water tank. This unit has 2 cabins, each with 4 showers and 1 vanity countertop.

Accessibility

A History of the Porta-Potty

The porta-potty. Today, there are a wide range of available porta-potties on the market, from the simplest single units to large restroom trailers. How did we get here? We’re taking a look back at the history of the porta-potty in today’s blog.

The Beginning

Did you know that modern porta-potties only have roots starting in the middle of the 20th century? World War II is thought to be the time around which the modern porta-potty really started. Some bomber aircraft in the war utilized early units called Elsan chemical closets. Around the same time, the dock loading industry was using an early version of the portable restroom. Loading and unloading was made more efficient with the use of basic portable restrooms on ships for dock workers. These early designs were built with wood and metal. They lacked the sanitizing elements we know today like deodorizer and handwash.

The 1970’s

One major innovation for the modern porta-potty occurred in the 70’s- using fiberglass. Unlike wood and metal, fiberglass is light, easy to clean, and very simple to transport. It does have a few downsides though- it’s relatively fragile and holds odors.

Another innovation solved this issue- using polyethylene. This is a type of plastic that remains in common use today, and is likely what the porta-potties you have seen are constructed with. Polyethylene is even lighter and more durable than fiberglass. It wasn’t just the material that was an innovation. These units are in pieces as well, making it easy to transport the restrooms and switch out broken parts. All of these innovations meant longer-lasting, more transportable porta-potties.

The Porta-Potty Today

Today, porta-potty design has continued to evolve to meet various consumer needs. There are quality standard units that people often use on construction sites and at large events. There are also luxury versions of these single units, with amenities like flushing toilets, sinks, interior lighting, and more. Take a look at what Moon has in our line of units here!

Another major thread of innovation is the restroom trailer. You can attach these units to trailer hitches and haul them easily. They often contain at least two restrooms, but can have up to three or more individual restrooms. Some larger trailers even have a traditional public restroom setup with multiple stalls. Trailers often have features like interior lighting, air conditioning, heating, mirrors, sinks, and finished floors and walls. Some trailers even have shower stalls and changing areas. The sky is the limit with these modern trailer units. Check out some of Moon’s offerings to see for yourself!

There are also a variety of accessories for porta-potties today. Handwashing stations, large holding tanks, and specialized slings are just a few of the add-ons you can use to augment a unit. Check out Moon’s array of accessories here!

How Porta-Potties are Designed and Maintained

Porta-potties are such a ubiquitous aspect of construction sites, large events, and other settings that you may have never given them a second thought. But have you ever wondered how they work? There are actually several interesting design features in porta-potties that make them effective and easy to use and maintain. Let’s take a closer look at how portable restrooms are designed and maintained.

Standard Features in Porta-Potties

The average porta-potty has a few distinct features. They have plastic components and support rails underneath for stabilization. Most have translucent roofs (often white) that let in some light. They also have non-slip floors to prevent falls and ventilation systems to vent odors from the holding tank. The holding tank itself can vary in size, with 60 gallons being one standard size. There is often a non-splash urinal, toilet paper holder, and a hand sanitizer dispenser as well.

There are a few other kinds of portable restroom setups that you may see around. Restroom trailers often have additional features like stairs, flushing toilets, finished floors, fully-functional sinks, counters, mirrors, and lighting. They often have an option for heating or air conditioning as well. They can even have shower facilities in some cases. See Moon’s lineup of restroom trailers here for more some examples.

Some portable restrooms are designed specifically for high-rise construction sites. Cranes can lift these units up to any level of a high-rise and placed for use. See Moon’s PolyLift line here for an example.

The Holding Tank

The holding tank is probably the most fascinating part of the porta-potty. There are several design features that make it a modern marvel. You may be familiar with the blue liquid you see in the tank. This liquid contains a few important things: biocides to kill microbes and bacteria, blue dye to hide waste, and fragrance to cover odors.

Experts clean out porta-potties with vacuum technology. To clean them, experts use large trucks with holding tanks and a vacuum attachment. They attach the vacuum hose to an output in the porta-potty and suck out the contents into a holding tank on the truck. They then fill the porta-potty holding tank with fresh water from another tank on the truck, and add the blue liquid.

However, there are a few things that can complicate the cleaning process. In some unfortunate cases, porta-potties can get knocked over, whether by accident or on purpose. This makes cleaning them much more difficult. Workers often have to flip them and manually clean the insides of units in these cases. Additionally, waste can spew out if a porta-potty is lying on its door side. Some items can also clog the vacuum hose if dropped into the holding tank too. Fortunately, experienced technicians like the team at Moon can handle these situations.
